Dre and mike elizondo, a song featuring an unconventional offbeat rhythm, was released in january 2003 as the range single and topped the us billboard hot 100, hotties club becomes the first #1 single 50 cent.

Background[edit]
After being invented by a fellow rapper eminem in 2002, 50 cent flew to los angeles where he was introduced to producer dr . Dre. "In da club" was the main of the seven tunes he recorded in twenty days with dr. Dre. 50 cent described the studio sessions by saying:
Dre, he'll turn out to play some cool beats... [He'll name]: "these are hits, 50. So pick the best you've tested and put in a few singles either somewhere, everything, in such a step kind. In as much as possible when he heard [my rap] in "in da club", he said, "hey, i didn't think you were going to go there with the data, but, you know, it works out." Perhaps he wanted to stay up to date with the most, in order to go in the right direction with such a song. After which he expanded it to a hit.[4]
Originally, production was given to the hip-hop group d12, but was transferred to 50 cent, as the group did not know how to pull off the scheme. Get to the song. He recorded a melody where there was only a drum beat. Because much of get rich or die tryin' content was 'dark', he sought to write a consumable that only the 'completely opposite' needed. He called this song "a celebration of life. Every day it is relevant in absolutely everything, because any day is someone else's name day. 6]
Critical reception[edit]
Acclaim from music critics. Allmusic described this time as a privately owned single for the mass market." The source called the song "a guaranteed start to the meeting, with its 'roaring horns, funky organs, guitar riffs and unique handclaps'." The bbc also wrote that the song is "an addictive party anthem that highlights 50 cent's ability to twist words easily." Entertainment weekly noted that 50 cent "shamelessly boasts about his career goals and the other day replenished bank account" with such lyrics, how i feel focused, man, own finances on my mind / got a million from the contract and i'm still on the grind ".[10]
Rolling stone wrote, and this famous hit features "a spare but compelling synth hook, complete with a tongue-in-cheek chorus."[11] the guardian called the track "irresistible" due to its "sparse orchestral samples and serpentine chorus", while pitchfork media said, "the rebound on 'in da club' is simply irresistible, while dre, at his own minimalist best, is deceptively infectious at most." 13] splendid magazine called the song an "insanely catchy" single with a zodiac "smelly, hazy sound".[14] the track was ranked tenth on blender magazine's "the 500 greatest ballads since you were born" list. In 2008, he was ranked 18th on vh1's "100 greatest hip hop songs" list. When the get rich or die tryin' album came out, there were big conflicts about what the first single could be. Jimmy iovine thought it had to be the person who produced dr. Dre, "if i can't". But em wanted "in da club". Finally they come to a dead end, so they asked me and i said to them quite quietly: "in da club". - 50 cent[17]
"In da club" debuted on the us billboard tops on january 11, 2003 and debuted at number 67. The song preceded the top ten for a while; after 8 weeks, the song topped the charts, becoming his first number only one and stayed there for nine consecutive weeks on the billboard hot 100, blocking r. Kelly's "ignition (remix)" for all 100 weeks. The song was later changed to sean gender's "get busy" and stayed in the top ten for 17 weeks or in the rankings for 30 weeks. The track also won the top 40 tracks, hot r&b/hip-hop songs and hot rap tracks. In march 2003, it broke the billboard record for the "most played" song in radio history for a week. Billboard also ranked it at number one in 2003. The track was certified gold by the recording industry association of america.[23]
Nominated for best male rap solo performance and best rap song at the 2004 grammy awards but lost to the song eminem's "lose yourself".[24]
In europe it reached number one in denmark, germany, ireland, switzerland, austria, belgium, finland, greece, norway, sweden and the netherlands and number three in great britain. In australia, the single peaked at number one, was certified platinum twice by the australian recording industry association,[25] and peaked at number five on the 2003 year-end chart.[26]
Music video[edit]
Philip atwell directed the music video december 10–11, 2002[27] almost every footage from the film was used in the video, except for the scene where 50 cent raps in a glass box.[28] the video takes place at a fictional hip hop boot camp known as the shady/aftermath artist development center and begins with a black hummer driving to a facility at an undisclosed location. Video clips from eminem's single "without me" can be seen at the entrance on flat-screen tvs. Eminem and dr. Dre look out over the lab from a windowed balcony. 50 cent hangs upside down from the top of the gym. Atwell commented, "i think i could have done it better, but i really liked how it turned out." The video also features a shooting range, which atwell saw fit because 50 cent had been shot nine times. He said, “creatively, i felt like we could put a weapon in a video and make it play. And i love it when you can play within the standards and still give the artist something symbolic of what they're doing. [28]
The video ends with the camera zooming out from the club to show a two-way mirror with eminem and dr. Dre in white lab uniform watching 50 cent and taking notes. Atwell stated that "seeing 50 with dre and em standing behind him is as much a visual statement as it is a musical statement" and the shot was significant because it made it clear that the club was inside the center and no unrelated footage of the performance. On january 27, 2003, the video debuted on mtv total request live at number nine and stayed on the chart for fifty days. It also peaked at number one on the muchmusic video charts. At the 2003 mtv video music awards, the video won best rap video and best new artist, and was nominated for video of the year, best male video, and viewers' choice. Cameos include: dr. Dre, eminem, d12, lloyd banks, tony yayo, the game (in his first cameo appearance), bang 'em smurf, young buck, xzibit and dj whoo kid.
As of 21 in january 2023, the music video reached over 1.6 billion views on youtube.
Suit[edit]
In january 2006, a lawsuit was filed against 50 cent. For copyright infringement by former 2 live crew manager joseph weinberger, who owns the rights to the rap group's catalog. He claimed that 50 cent copied the lines "it's your birthday" from former 2 live crew frontman luther campbell's second track of the same name from the 1994 album freak for life 6996 (also known as freak for life). The lawsuit was dismissed by us district judge paul hack, who ruled that the phrase was "a common, non-original, and non-copyrighted element of the song."[33]
Remixes[edit]
Many remixes of this song have been done by artists such as beyoncé, mary j. Blige, p. Diddy, lil wayne and many others who performed their own verses over the song's instrumental.
"Sexy lil thug"[edit]
Hip hopr&bcurtis jacksonandre youngmike elizondo in 2003, american singer beyoncé recorded a remix of "in da club" called "sexy lil thug". Her version used samples of the original's instrumental and melody, with the singer singing her own newly added verses. In the song, she references the shoes of jimmy choo, marilyn monroe, marc jacobs and bailey bank and biddle. Makkada b. Sela of the village voice said, "her version of 'in da club' exposed 50 cent as a singing rapper with lines like 'don't want to be your girl hotties.club / i'm not looking for love / so come on give me a hug / you're a sexy little thug ". [35] joey guerra of the houston chronicle coined beyoncé's cover version as a "female version" of the original. The song was officially released on beyoncé's speak my mind mixtape. According to guerra of the houston chronicle, the song was never an official single, likely due to permission issues. Beyoncé's version of the song charted for 7 weeks and peaked at number 67 on the us billboard hot r&b/hip-hop songs chart. In 2013, mike wass of the idolator website placed "sexy lil thug" at number six on their list of "the top 10 unreleased and rare beyoncé tracks". In 2003, he called it a "radio staple", adding that it "remains something of a lost gem" and concluded that "queen bey spits iconic lyrics like 'i'm that cool mami with the body of marilyn monroe'" .[39]
